Backpacking and Climate Change

Are you tired of scrolling through photos of stranded polar bears and infographics on how you aren’t doing enough? Join us as we get a break from climate doom and spend time backpacking, camping and exploring on the Big Island. This I-Term is all about finding a sense of place and learning what it means to be a steward of the earth. You’ll get to help out on a working farm, support native ecosystem restoration, visit Hakalau National Wildlife Refuge to learn how climate change is affecting the native birds of Big Island, and backpack through the unique landscapes of the Kaʻu Desert to camp on remote beaches. What better place to figure out our role in climate change action than outside? Some answers just can't be found in textbooks!

Biospheres of the peruvian amazon

Immerse yourself in the most biodiverse place on Earth! Journey with us to Peru, where we will learn about how local communities are fighting to preserve endangered wildlife and plants in places where natural habitat has been lost or modified through agricultural expansion. Experience the majesty of the Andes Mountains first hand at Wayqecha Cloud Forest Research Station, where we will spend several nights in one of the most unique cloud forest ecosystems on Earth hiking, wildlife watching, and assisting resident biologists with bird and amphibian population studies. Then, travel downriver by boat into the heart of the Amazon Basin, for unparalleled opportunities to spot rainforest species such as jaguars, capybaras, anteaters and monkeys in their natural habitats, before arriving at Crees Manu, a community-based research and education center located on a 643 hectare rainforest reserve. At Crees, we will help support infrastructure projects alongside members of Indigenous Amazonian communities, go for night hikes in the jungle, and gain hands-on experience working with an organization that is an internationally recognized leader in rainforest conservation and sustainable community-based tourism.

Diving down under

Travel to North Queensland, Australia, home to both the Great Barrier Reef and the ancient Daintree Rainforest, to learn important lessons about innovative solutions to climate change and traditional approaches to land stewardship. Due to global climate change and coral bleaching in recent decades, The Great Barrier Reef is an oceanscape that is rapidly disappearing. This is our chance to explore the reef during multiple dives (open for snorkeling or SCUBA), and learn from expert divers and marine biologists about steps that are being taken to prevent the rapid loss of marine biodiversity. Above the water, the Daintree region encompasses a unique ecosystem that has existed for millions of years, with white sandy beaches and fringing reefs just offshore. It has been called home by Aboriginal Australians for thousands of years; we will have the opportunity to engage with the Mandingalbay Yidinji people, the traditional owners and custodians of this land, to learn about the cultural significance of the environment and their relationship with the land and sea. Our goal will be to find practical ways to apply the lessons we learn during I-Term to our own fragile ocean and terrestrial ecosystems back home in Hawai’i.

Students will make connections with other area schools that are interested and kick off the first Drone racing exposition in Hawaii. The foundational skills developed in this course will help support future innovation and sustainability projects in our community, such as restoration efforts at Kawainui. Drones can be used to help map project sites, capture progress, locate marine debris in the ocean, and much more.

DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS

Since the beginning of time, stories, myths and tales have been used to address ethical questions, shine a light on injustice, and create connections that bring people together. Perhaps no form of storytelling has the ability to do this as immersively and with as much excitement, heartbreak and adventure as Dungeons and Dragons. In this I-Term, you will create your own character and journey with your peers into another realm. What kind of adventurer will you be, what will you stand up for, and what legacy will you leave through your choices? The students who participate in this I-Term will help produce suggestions for programs and policies to support justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in our community. The heart of Dungeons and Dragons is actually storytelling, so use your imagination, slip into character, and come up with something completely LEGENDARY!
