BIG ISLAND BACKPACKING

This I-Term is all about one big giant screen break! No phones, no Zoom, no social media! Instead, you’ll get to help out on a working farm, camp under the stars, learn more about Hawaiian culture and backpack into a beautiful beach you’ll likely have to yourselves. This may be just what the doctored ordered!

BIG ISLAND SCUBA

Already SCUBA certified? Travel to the Big Island for a certified dive tour in Kona. This is an opportunity for students who have already been dive certified to put their skills to good use, exploring epic coral reefs and experience the bathymetry that only Kona can offer. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to swim with the manta rays! In addition to diving, you’ll get to tour the Kona Sea Salt factory and see the lava.

In one week, play an epic game of Dungeons and Dragons and novelize it into a story, play or graphic novel. The heart of Dungeons and Dragons is actually storytelling, so use your imagination, slip into character, and come up with something completely LEGENDARY! E-SPORTS CAMP

Le Jardin Academy is going to join the world of E-Sports this spring. Learn more about E-Sports and get a jump start on possibly joining our E-Sports team during this week long E-Sports Camp. The camp will focus on coaching, development and scrimmaging. For some, this will be a great segue into the spring league, which will include competitions, live streaming of games with shoutcasting commentary on TWITCH, expert coaching, holistic curriculums, and COPPA compliant communication tools

Farm Life

Join the Wild Community Farm team in its vision to create a community garden for Windward families. Learn how to build your own raised bed, grow, harvest, and prepare your own food in Hawaii. Participants will work at the Wild Community Farm where they will be given their own plot to tend for up to 6 months, per their own interest in continuing to grow food for their family. The cohort will get to help design the lay-out for the Wild community garden, and learn more about “farm life” in Hawaii.

Indigenous Culture and Climate Exchange

Spend time with members of Iñupiat tribe in Alaska to learn more about subsistence living in harsh climates, climate change in northern latitudes, and long term relationships between native Alaskan and native Hawaiian cultures. Itinerary may include the 2022 Iditarod, Byron Glacier, and the world Ice Art Championships. As part of this exchange, participants will learn the art of storytelling, orally, in writing and through the lens of a camera.

March 4th-12th in Alaska.

LA’au Lapa’au seminar

Learn about traditional Hawaiian medicine from Dr. Solomon D.K. Nalua’i, M.D., PhD. Students will learn traditional protocols, relevant legends and history, La’au terms, scientific principles, medicinal practices and uses, and engage in relevant laboratory preparations. Classes will include outdoor hikes to identify herbs, indoor class discussions and lectures, and daily labs. As a culminating project, students will get to create their own Hawaiian first aid kit.

MAKANI OLU Sailing the Islands

Join the Makani Olu crew for another epic sailing adventure! This course is one of the best ways to connect to our island home, learn about Hawaiian culture, build your resilience, and bond with your peers. This five day inter-island sail will change your life and remain an important hallmark in your personal growth for years to come.

NATIVE ECOSYSTEM SUPPORT

Learn more about our precious ecosystems in Hawaii by contributing to various restoration and conservation projects. These projects will be in areas that you may not normally have access to, allowing you to engage in work with leading experts in the field of natural resource management. This course may very well inform your future life path, and is an excellent opportunity to help protect our island.

PRINTMAKING

In this course, students will refurbish the school’s printmaking press and then use that press to make block prints and other printmaking art with it. The cohort will have the chance to visit the new Honolulu Printmakers studio print shop in Chinatown to learn how professional artists utilize print shops to create art. Students will also engage in a factory tour of Crazy Shirts to see screen printing of t-shirts on a commercial scale. This is an excellent opportunity to learn a new art form and possibly explore future business endeavors.

SKATEBOARD CAMP

Spend a week honing your skateboarding skills at different skateparks. This will hopefully include 2 sessions at Proper Rideshop, an established skate shop and training facility in Honolulu. Receive training and instruction designed for all levels of skaters from their team of professional instructors and experienced board riders. Through skateboarding, strengthen your social, mental and physical skills!

TAI CHI

Looking to de-stress after months of class work and college essays? Tai Chi may be just what you need. Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It has been shown to help reduce stress and anxiety, as well as increase flexibility and balance. Participate in a week of activities dedicated to learning the history, practice and value of Tai Chi in our beautiful local environment.

Tiny house nation and plastic makerspace

It’s time! The final push on our Tiny House Student Lounge will take place this I-Term. Students will focus on interior design and any final exterior considerations, including plants surrounding its location at the high school. Utilizing our Plastic Makerspace, students will be able to create repurposed plastic decor, including a plastic mural on old surfboards. Help senior Beckham Richards (pictured left) realize his dream of finally getting to enjoy the Tiny House he’s put years of sweat equity into!
