At Le Jardin Academy, a remarkable transformation takes place each year, an intellectual and personal evolution that students eagerly await: I-Term. Starting in 2019, this unique program offers an immersive experience, allowing students to explore passions, nurture talents, and broaden their horizons, all while creating lasting memories. Over the years students have traveled to Cambodia, Japan, Holland, the UK, Fiji, and Australia, to name a few. They have learned skills in cosmetology, robotics, food production, lei-making, mechanics, and self-defense.
“My favorite past I-term experience was the Makani Olu last year. It was a week-long trip where we sailed the islands, fished, saw amazing sea life, and more,” remarks Nyssa, a current Freshman. I-Term encourages students to step out of their comfort zones and explore a myriad of subjects. From marine biology expeditions to jewelry making, the opportunities are as diverse as students' interests.
Olivia Sousa, a 10th grader, states, “[I-Term] made it possible for me to discover my passion for backpacking. Since then, I have gone to Montana with Wild Kids, which is another backpacking trip, and plan on doing more trips in the future.” Olivia’s experience epitomizes the essence of I-Term, inspiring students to venture into the unknown, discover new passions, and emerge with a deeper understanding of the world.
Every I-Term is a tapestry of experiences, woven by the passion and enthusiasm of students. Whether it’s immersing themselves in the rich history of ancient civilizations or diving into the world of backpacking, students find fulfillment in their pursuits.
“In my time at Le Jardin, I-Term has allowed me to explore some of the world’s most beautiful natural spaces, visit incredible cities, learn about amazing cultures, and make meaningful connections with my classmates and teachers,” shares Arwen, a current Senior. “Visiting the UK and Holland to investigate what makes cities sustainable, after taking and then helping to teach 10th-grade urban planning was an amazing experience for me”. Arwen intends to minor in Urban Studies in college next year.
The anticipation for the upcoming I-Term in March 2024 is palpable at Le Jardin Academy as students eagerly dive into preparations for their transformative journeys. What makes I-Term truly exceptional is the active involvement of students in the planning process. With boundless enthusiasm, they have started researching activities, scouting accommodation options, and comparing flight deals. Engaged in real-world applications of their knowledge, students are not only booking flights and hotels but also meticulously planning meals and crafting detailed itineraries. Furthermore, their active participation extends to the heart of the academic experience: designing the content of their courses. Collaboratively, they brainstorm ideas, debate topics, and curate learning experiences that align with their passions and aspirations. This hands-on approach empowers students, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility for their educational journey, making I-Term an experience that goes beyond the classroom, preparing them for a future where initiative, collaboration, and adaptability are key.
In the words of Norah Dodson, a passionate I-Term participant, “I-Term is the perfect avenue for students to find new passions, learn interactively, and have fun while doing so!”. As we embark on another exciting I-Term season, we look forward to witnessing the growth, enthusiasm, and creativity of students.
Hana Pono - A student perspective
Written by Arwen Revere
In the heart of our vibrant school community, amidst the eager faces of students, dedicated educators, and supportive families, I’m excited to discuss a concept that is more than just a phrase but rather a way of life. My name is Arwen Revere, and I am honored to be a member of the class of 2024, a community that has been my home since kindergarten. Last year, the privilege of serving as the high school student body president gave me a profound understanding of our school's new mission - hana pono, which literally translates to “good work.” However, it is so much more than that. It embodies the essence of doing what is right, just, and honorable. It is about honoring our values and those of the community around us, making choices that uplift others and ourselves.
For those who might not be acquainted with this beautiful Hawaiian philosophy, hana pono calls for embracing the diversity within our community, respecting each other's unique backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, and contributing positively to our shared environment. It challenges us not just to prepare for the future but to actively shape it. When we speak of "positively impacting the world," it’s a call to action that reverberates within the very core of our community.
In this journey towards hana pono, we are reminded that even the smallest acts of kindness, respect, and responsibility can create a chain reaction of positivity, extending far beyond the confines of our school. Whether it's expressing gratitude to a teacher, engaging in class discussions, participating in community service activities, or supporting our fellow students at athletic events, hana pono is woven into the fabric of our daily lives.
From our youngest learners taking their first steps on their educational journey to our graduating seniors stepping confidently into the next chapter of their lives, we are united in this initiative. Together, we have a unique opportunity in the coming year - to grow, learn, and understand one another on a deeper level. Our gatherings are not mere moments of passive listening; they are opportunities to connect, exchange ideas, and build relationships. This journey is not solely about academic success; it is about personal growth, empathy, and embracing the richness of human experiences. Let us continue this journey, hand in hand, and make hana pono the guiding light that illuminates our path forward.
