BIODIVERSITY OF OʻAHU

Explore different biomes on our home island.

Students will be engaged in daily outdoor expeditions to observe and document native and introduced species of plants and animals in Hawaiian ecosystems on the island of Oahu. Students will explore two forest and two stream ecosystems, and one intertidal and fringing reef zone. We will collect specimens and use photography to document our discoveries in order to create a digital portfolio of animal species as well as a physical book (herbarium) containing dried plant specimens. We will also visit the preserved collections of plants, insects, fish, and mollusks (such as snails) at the Bishop Museum. In the preceding classes before the I-Term, students will learn the classification system that scientists use to categorize species into different taxonomic groups and the methods used for species identification.
