Immerse yourself in the rich melodies, rhythms, and cultural heritage of Hawai’i through the enchanting world of Kanikapila – the art of spontaneous music-making. In this dynamic and engaging course, students in grades 6 through 12 will journey through the captivating sounds of Hawaiian music, exploring its historical roots, cultural significance, and vibrant contemporary expressions.

Course Highlights:

• Introduction to Hawaiian Music: Delve into the fascinating history of Hawaiian music, tracing its origins from ancient chants and traditional instruments, to its fusion with Carribean (Reggae/Jawaiian), and Western influences.

• Essential Instruments: Gain hands-on experience with quintessential Hawaiian instruments such as the ukulele, acoustic (slack-key) guitar, upright bass, and various percussion instruments, unlocking the secrets behind their distinctive sounds.

• Melodies and Chords: Develop your musicality as you learn to play and harmonize traditional Hawaiian melodies and chords, focusing on the importance of storytelling and emotion in musical expression.

• Kanikapila Traditions: Dive into the art of Kanikapila, where students collaborate in informal jam sessions, improvising melodies and harmonies in a relaxed and supportive environment, fostering creativity and group dynamics.

• Cultural Context: Explore the cultural significance of Hawaiian music in relation to hula, storytelling, and community gatherings, gaining a deeper understanding of the integral role music plays in Hawaiian society.

• Contemporary Fusion: Discover how Hawaiian music has evolved and merged with other genres, from reggae to folk, resulting in exciting contemporary fusions that honor tradition while embracing innovation.

• Performance and Presentation: Develop confidence in your musical abilities as you practice and perform Hawaiian songs individually and as part of a group, honing skills in stage presence and connecting with your audience.

• Culminating Experience: Showcase your newfound musical prowess and appreciation for Hawaiian culture in a final Hō'ike performance that reflects the depth of your journey through the melodies, rhythms, and stories of the Hawaiian islands.

By the end of this course, students will:

Prerequisites:  Some musical experience is required, and a curiosity for exploring new musical traditions with an eagerness to collaborate with fellow students is essential.

Students are encouraged to bring their own ukuleles if available, but instruments will also be provided for practice during class sessions.
