PONO POPOKI: ANIMAL WELFARE

Care about animal welfare, and about protecting our sensitive island ecosystems and species from the free-roaming animal crisis?

This I-Term experience will continue the critical animal welfare and environmental work of the LJA Pono Popoki project, 2023 US OurEcho Challenge 1st Place Winners! Explore the root causes of stray and free-roaming domestic animals (cats and dogs) in Hawaii and their impacts on fragile ecosystems. Then, we will investigate solutions to these issues, experience pono solutions on O’ahu (Popoki Place O’ahu Cat Sanctuary, Poi Dogs & Popoki, Hawaii Humane Society, Rescue Veterinary Clinic, Toe Beans & Dreams, Lucky Paws Adoption Center), and identify community action and future careers. Finally, our week will culminate in a 2 day trip to Lanaʻi to visit the Lana’i Cat Sanctuary and go birdwatching in native ecosystem reserves. Create pono solutions to tough problems!
